Vougeot is tiny, even by Burgundian standards. It is most famous for the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot and its expansive, walled vineyard. In fact, the town is not much bigger than this vineyard. The chateau has been a mecca for wine production for about 900 years when the Cistercian monks built the original structure and continued the tradition of making wine in this area. It is now the home of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin – the esteemed organization started in the 1930′s to promote Burgundy wines. I was fortunate enough to be inducted into the brotherhood at the venerable chateau in 2005. A huge honor.
The walled vineyard is the largest single vineyard in Burgundy. About 90 winemakers own vines in this vineyard. But there are some wonderful wines made from the few vineyards in Vougeot that are outside this Clos. We have 2 winemakers who make wines from Vougeot. One actually lives in the village and makes lush and rich wines. The other has vines in the Clos and makes some of those famous wines.
